• Student Appearance

    (Board Policy 7-160)

A student’s appearance, including dress and hygiene, must not disrupt the educational process or compromise standards of health and safety. The District does not prohibit hairstyles historically associated with race, ethnicity, or hair texture associated with any other protected class under Board Policy 7-10, Equal Educational Opportunities, including, but not limited to, protective hairstyles such as braids, locks, and twists. The District allows a student to modify their athletic or team uniform for the purpose of modesty in clothing or attire that is in accordance with the requirements of their religion or cultural values or modesty preferences. A student is not required to receive the prior approval of the school board for such modifications. The District also does not prohibit the right of a student to wear or accessorize the student's graduation attire with items associated with the student's cultural, ethnic, or religious identity or other characteristic or category protected under the Ill. Human Rights Act, 775 ILCS 5/1-103(Q). Students who disrupt the educational process or compromise standards of health and safety must modify their appearance. Procedures for guiding student appearance will be developed by the Superintendent or designee and included in the Student Handbook(s). Rules concerning student dress and grooming will be developed by the Superintendent or Superintendent's designee and included in the Student Handbook.

    Such rules will:

    • Encourage students to dress in good taste and present a general appearance that is commendable.
    • Prohibit clothing or adornment that disrupts the educational process.
    • Prohibit dress that constitutes a potential safety or health hazard.

Students may be prohibited from wearing certain color combinations or articles of clothing and displaying symbols or other insignia reasonably believed to represent or imitate gang affiliation. Further, student attire determined by District 113 administrative staff to be obscene, indecent, or depicting illegal items or activity (including but not limited to alcohol, drugs, drug paraphernalia, and weapons) will not be permitted.
